Arboriculture Conference Attracts European Tree Climbers

CHAMPAIGN, IL, USA (April 24, 2006) -The French Society of Arboriculture (SFA) is hosting the European Congress of Arboriculture May 5-10 in Nantes, France. Conference events include educational sessions, a public and professional trade show, and a professional tree climbing competition.

On Friday, May 5th, 35 climbers will compete in the French National Tree Climbing Championship at Grand Blottereau Park. The top scoring male and female competitors from that event will then compete in the European Tree Climbing Championship (ETCC). During the ETCC the top climbers from all over Europe will compete to be known as the best and fastest climber of Europe. This competition will be held at the park on Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7.

Competition events will include aerial rescue, work climb, throw line, speed climb and secured footlock events. All of these events are designed to simulate arborists' work related tasks and emphasize skill and safety. The top male and female scorers then compete in the Masters' Challenge Climb. The winners of the Masters' round become the ETCC champions and will go on to compete in the International Tree Climbing Competition (ITCC) that will be held in Minneapolis, MN, United States on July 29 and 30.

Also during this three day event at Grand Blottereau Park, professionals will be available to offer tree care advice to the public. Workshops will be provided to help the public better understand trees and their benefits. For arboriculture professionals, the conference will continue May 8th through 10th with educational sessions devoted to the theme "Urban Trees and Sustainable Development."
